In the heart of the Dordogne – approx. 15 km north eastern direction of the city of Bergerac – the ancient farm “Les Meygnauds” (built in the 18th century) is situated on a hill. The unique site of the property within nature and without any neighbours fascinates every visitor. When looking from the hill down to the valley, you can only see meadows, pastures and fish-ponds and on the other side of the valley a mixed forest. The property “Les Meygnauds” consists of approx. 11 hectares of half forest and half meadows. The north-western boundaries of the property are parallel to the ancient “Route Napoléon” that led from Paris over Bergerac to Santiago di Compostella. According to historical books, the “Pigeonnier” of the farm was used in those times as fort-tower of a horse-changing station. Parts of the Main House have been built in the second half of the 18th century, also. “Les Meygnauds” had been vacant and forgotten for over 13 years, before the Bernau family from Berlin became owner of the property in 1991. Only parts of the Barn and the meadows had been used by a tenant farmer. During this time, all buildings suffered very much, more than half of the roof of the Barn had already broken down. Today, after 13 years of renovating and modernizing, all buildings are perfect – beautifully designed in the typical old Périgord-style. The Main House, the “Pigeonier”, the Barn, the Barbeque (roofed), and the little “Garden-House” form the inner court, fenced by a wall which is open to the south-west. In 1997/1988 a swimming-pool (4.5 m x 18 m, covered by an automatic floating roll) was built in front of the Main House, together with a “bath-house”. This area too, has a stone wall around and is situated within old fruit-trees and allows the sunlight to come in until night. The Bernau family has made of “Les Meygnauds” a summer residence with about 500 sqm dwelling space that offers place for 20 to 25 family members and friends. All buildings can be heated with gas – partly with underfloor heating – and there are four complete bathrooms. One of the main elements of life on “Les Meygnauds” during winter and summer are the large open fireplaces. The Main House offers three fireplaces out of which one is large enough to place two chairs within the fireplace, on the left and right side of the fire, which was usual in former times. The largest and most beautiful fireplace was bought in 1997 and built in the “Knights’ Hall” in the barn (today’s height 4 m), a room that may be used for parties for more than 30 persons. During summer, the heat of the fifth fireplace can be enjoyed in the Barbeque until late at night. Main House, “Pigeonier” and Barn can be used separately
and independently from the other buildings. Each building is equipped
with heating, bathroom and kitchen,
so that even only part of the property can be used or rented to guests.
All buildings are equipped with a security system that is permanently
connected to a security company. “Les Meygnauds” can be reached through the D 107, then
going uphill for approx. 700 m. An illuminated portal,
that can be opened and closed by a remote control, gives way to the
property. St. Émilion is 40 minutes away, Bordeaux 50 minutes
and the airport Bordeaux-Mérignac can be reached within 60
minutes by car. |
